Long Answer:
The Entrepreneur Mind by Kevin D. Johnson is an absolute must-read for any individual looking to become an entrepreneur or who has less than 5 years as one. I think this book answers a ton of myths, questions, and concerns a lot of entrepreneurs encounter when starting out or figuring out where to start. This book was given to me as a gift from my father-in-law during my first months of stepping out of corporate America and into the limitless world of entrepreneurship.
Although I had been working to build my company over the past 2.5 years, this was the year I left my extremely comfortable aerospace engineering career to become a full-time entrepreneur. I finally decided to invest 100% of my time and energy into my company. This was not a hard decision once I was finally ready but the years leading up to this decision were tough. I spent many long hours and nights slowly growing my business on the side. There were certainly days/weeks I wanted to throw in the towel but my patience paid off. Because I waited, the transition was smooth. For anyone currently in the limbo state, I challenge you to push through the extra hours and wait until you can support yourself first. This made the decision of choosing to work for myself full-time strategic, rather than emotional. I also value that I was able to not put unnecessary stress and strain on my family.
Why Read This Book?
Rather than the traditional chapter book filled with tons of useless filler content, this book broke each concept up into 100 essential nuggets (as stated in the tagline). The points are clearly articulated with action steps to help you in your journey. This breakdown of much smaller, palatable steps to success is a great example of how small daily habits can achieve complex goals. By breaking any insurmountable goal into smaller enough pieces, it becomes extremely easy to succeed. Since the book took this same approach, I found it extremely easy to turn reading into one of my morning habits prior to starting each workday. This ensured I was thinking forward as a business owner and not just a menial taskmaster jumping from one fire to the next.
